UNICEF-GIWA at laddakh on the Sindhu River for Sanitation

August 30, 2016, Leh-Ladakh: The second day of the historic Global Interfaith WASH Alliance (GIWA) Summit in Ladakh that was organised with technical support from UNICEF, brought together leaders of different religions part of GIWA India, the Hon’ble Science and Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, as well as over 300 people includingBuddhist scholars, religious organisations, students and local community members.

A special interfaith Peace Garden was inaugurated at the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre and the foundation of an a bio-toilet was shared. The bio-toilet will be built near the centre’s Meditation Hall, which previously lacked sanitation facilities. The Faith leaders also participated in a historic walk-for-WASH, wherein leaders walked to major places of worship around the town of Leh, including the Moravian Church, Ladakh Buddhist Association Monastery, Dantan Sahib Gurudwara, Masjid Sharif, Imam Bara, Krishna Temple, where they met and interacted with local faith leaders and community members. The walk illustrated the commitment of GIWA’s faith leaders to bring about a sanitation revolution in India by engaging and inspiring people. Local Ladakhis came out on the streets to join the movement in a demonstration of solidarity for WASH.

The Summit concluded with a historic pledge and water blessing ceremony on the banks of the Sindhu River, at the Sindhu Darshan Ghat, in Leh-Ladakh. Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Union Minister for Science & Technology, Mr Tsering Dorjay, Hon’ble Minister of State of Cooperative and Minister of State, Ladakh Affairs along with the 25 faith leaders and UNICEF representatives participated in a Water Blessing Ceremony. All dignitaries gathered together to offer the water of the river onto the globe as a symbol and a prayer that all of humanity should have access to safe and sufficient water, sanitation and hygiene. Faith leaders along with dignitaries joined hands to reiterate the Sankalp (commitment) for sanitation.

On the occasion, the Hon’ble Minister, Dr. Harshvardhan said, “It is so wonderful to see such commitment of our interfaith leaders of the Global Interfaith WASH Alliance take this message of Swachhta to every street corner, every place of worship, reaching out to as many communities
and in as many ways as possible in the two days.” He also lauded UNICEF, the corporate and media stakeholders who had joined in the two day summit for their commitment and dedication.

One of the GIWA leaders, Ven Bhikkhu Sanghasena added that the Summit has put a spotlight on the more critical issues ailing Ladakh, and the awareness generated through the GIWA platform moving forward would be catalytic. “This coming together of political leaders and religious leaders, speaking in one voice, for the cause of Swachhta, is unprecedented.”

Co-founder of GIWA, Swami Chidanand Saraswati in his concluding speech said, “At the beginning of this journey we had asked ourselves why WASH? Over the past two days of deliberation, its importance has been understood by all. Today, in Ladakh, we take a pledge of ‘Ekta‘ or oneness – without boundaries of caste, creed and religion – that we will all work together to ensure the problems related to sanitation in Ladakh and the country are solved. That is our mission, message and take away from this momentous gathering.”

The GIWA India, in association with UNICEF India, held a two-day Summit in Ladakh, entitled the ‘Worship for WASH’. The Ladakh Summit initiates a dialogue on critical issues of WASH, specifically in the Ladakh region. The Summit discussed the inter-linkage of multiple issues of inequity, lack of access and other related issues in the region, with special focus on minority populations.

NAPM Welcome SC Judgement on Singur Land Acquistion

New Delhi, August 31 : NAPM welcomes the Supreme Court’s land mark decision quashing the forcible land acquisition of 1000 acres by the West Bengal government in 2006 for the Tata car factory. The decision by Justices V. Gopala Gowda and Arun Mishra that the land be returned to the original land owners of Singur, marks another chapter in the long history of resistances by the people’s movements against forcible land acquisition in name of public purpose for private corporations. Singur marked a turning point in 2006 when the resistance against the Special Economic Zones were just gathering steam and it emboldened our collective struggles all around.

We congratulate farmers of Singur who fought the ten years long legal battle and kept the pressure for return of the land with the help of the Trinamool Congress led West Bengal government. We also welcome the fact that the farmers don’t have to return the money and the Jutsice Gowda’s observation that the land acquisition for a private company to build a car plant doesn’t constitute ’public purpose’. This is in line with what we have been saying for long and only vindicates our position.

Since, the enactment of the new land law in 2013, the governments have been bypassing the law to acquire land for private corporations and not adhering to the consent clause and need for conducting social impact assessment and limiting it only to cash compensation. The NDA government even thrice brought Ordinances to amend the law to facilitate easy acquisition of the land for private corporations and for profiteering in the name of the public purpose. Supreme Court’s judgement today is again a vindication and reaffirmation of the positions we have taken, where anything and everything has been justified in the name of public purpose. Any forcible land acquisition for corporate profit in the name of public purpose and development of nation is not acceptable and is completely anti farmer and anti people and unconstitutional, as reiterated by Supreme Court judgement today.

A number of people’s movements today have joined hands with the mass organisations of the Left parties on the need for protecting land rights and oppose forcible land acquisition across the country. This unity has led to defeat of the NDA government’s design amend the 2013 land law and extend support and solidarity to community organisations opposing forcible land acquisition. With the West Bengal government backing Singur farmers, and Left parties also standing with people’s movements, we do hope that a collective consensus will emerge from West Bengal on a people-centric development agenda and industrialisation, where interests of the workers, peasants and farmers will be at the centre of it and not profit and corporate greed.

We once again congratulate the farmers of the Singur for their valiant struggle!

Naresh -Hit the road for Hillary!

Naresh —

We’re officially heading into the final sprint towards Election Day, so we’re making every investment we can in the key states that will deliver Hillary a historic victory this fall.

At this point, there is nothing more important than building the ground game — organizers, offices, and volunteers — because without those states pulling the lever for Hillary, we don’t have a viable road to the White House. But every door knocked and every voter registered gets us a little bit closer to that goal.

That’s why I’m reaching out to you.

Right now we’re assembling a team of our best supporters who would be willing to get on the road and volunteer for a day or weekend in a pivotal state. Naresh, can we add your name to this list? We’re working on this plan as we speak, and it’s only going to work if we have every pair of hands on deck.

You’ve been with Hillary every step of this campaign, and each time you’ve chipped in, volunteered for a shift, or stood with her at a critical moment, we’ve noticed. Literally nothing up until now would have been possible without you, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

That’s why we know you would be perfect for this next part of the race, when we shift to turning out every possible vote for Hillary. You’ll be a part of the team that is going the extra mile — or maybe a few more than that! — to make sure we take a giant leap forward as a nation when the final votes are cast on November 8th. You can be a more integral part of making that history.

Let us know today, Naresh, if we can count on you to be on this essential crew of supporters. It could mean all the difference as we wage the fight of our lives:

Thanks so much,

Lauren Crawford

Barack Obama cuts short the sentences of 111 federal inmates

US President Barack Obama has cut short the sentences of 111 federal inmates, in another round of commutations for those convicted of nonviolent drug offences. Earlier this month, 214 federal inmates were granted commutation.

Mr Obama has long called for phasing out strict sentences for drug convictions. White House Counsel, Neil Eggleston yesterday said, the commutations underscored the President’s commitment to using his clemency authority to give deserving individuals a second chance. He said that Mr Obama has granted a total of 673 commutations, more than the previous 10 Presidents combined.

In 1980, the federal prison population was less than 25,000. Now, according to US Federal Bureau of Prisons, there are more than one lakh 93 thousnads federal inmates.

John Kerry to meet PM Modi today

US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi today. Earlier, India and the United States agreed to tackle the challenges of terrorism and strengthen intelligence sharing mechanism. Addressing a joint press conference with Mr Kerry after US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said, nations must not act as sanctuaries and safe havens for terrorist organisations. She apprised Mr Kerry of cross border terrorism by Pakistan and categorically said that there are no good or bad terrorists.

Mrs Swaraj said, Pakistan should withdraw safe havens provided to LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad and D-Company. Mrs Swaraj said, she and Mr Kerry agreed that Pakistan needs to book perpetrators of 2008 Mumbai terror attack and 2016 Pathankot airbase attack. She also thanked Secretary Kerry for United States’s constant support for India’s membership in Nuclear Suppliers Group.

Mr Kerry said, there cannot be distinction between good and bad terrorists as terror is terror no matter where it emanates from or who carries it out. Saying that Pakistan must act against terrorists in its territory, he said, US will continue to support all efforts to bring the perpetrators of 2008 Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot attacks to justice.

Briefing media, Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, that Government has launched a transparent Government e-market place, developed by Directorate General of Supplies and Disposal. She said, both countries have agreed to look at best practices exchange. US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker said that she will look into India’s concerns over the hike in visa fee for professionals.

John Kerry:Appeals all nations to unitedly fight against terrorism

US Secretary of State John Kerry said, terror groups and extremism cannot be fought by one nation and all countries have to confront the menace together. Interacting with the students of IIT Delhi this morning, both India and US know the pain of terrorism and it is important to strike its root cause. He said, security threat is the biggest challenge.

Speaking on the Indo-US relationship, the Secretary of State said, in recent years, trade between the two nations has doubled and Washington is now New Delhi’s top export market. He said, both countries worked together in Nepal during the devastating earthquake, evacuated the people trapped in war-torn Yemen and trained peace-keepers in Africa.

Talking on India, John Kerry said, India is an established power and is playing a crucial role in the world today. He said, India is an essential partner and the US has welcomed its rise. Both countries are the two largest democracies in the world bound with common values for tolerance, equality, respect of religious pluralism and peace.

Replying to a query on India’s bid for permanent UNSC seat, Mr Kerry said, there is a way but it is a bit complicated. On Pakistan, Mr Kerry said, it is clear that there is work to do for Pakistan to push harder against sanctuaries of terror.

He said, polarization anywhere in the world is not good as it reflects intolerance and frustration. He said, relationship between India and the US is not just only important for the two democracies but also for the rest of the world. Hes said, relationship between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi built on sense of common purpose.
