New Delhi, March 9, 2017: India’s first Women Cricket League (WCL), unveiled its logo and formally launched announcing plans for WCL #T20 league on International Women’s Day. Unveiling the logo, Mrs. Vandana Thakur, Managing Partner, WCL said “Women cricketers are yet to become household names in a cricket-crazy country like India. WCL will provide women cricket players a much needed opportunity to step out of the shadows, participate in national and international tournaments and leagues to showcase their talent and receive the fame they deserve.”

Elaborating on the structure of WCL, Mr. Parul Jain, Founder, Women Cricket League said “WCLwill scout hidden talent from schools and colleges in small towns and cities in India, international clubs and even non-cricket playing countries.

“ WCL’s T20 League will have eight teams. Teams will be created on the basis of registration. The players will be sourced from club teams and inter-college cricket tournaments. The final teams will be declared on WCL’s website,” Mr Jain explained.

The website www.womencricketleague.com will be open for free registration from 9th March, 2017.

“All registered candidates will go through a selection process and trials by some of the most eminent sports personalities. The final list of selected players will be trained under the watchful eyes of renowned coaches. We will provide coaching and mentorship in addition to the best professional quality training. WCL will strive to create professionals and take them to the highest pedestal,” informed Mrs Pooja Sharma, Managing Partner, WCL.

As first in the series of activities for WCL’s talent hunt, WCL #T20 Inter-College Talent Hunt Tournament of six brilliant women teams from Gargi college, Lakshmibai college, Bharti College, KLM Dayanand college, Jesus & Mary college (JMC) and Kamla Nehru College (KNC) of  Delhi University is starting from 10th March, 2017 from 10.30 am at Gargi College.

WCL’s Objectives:

·          To promote professional level cricket for women.

·          To encourage women to consider women’s cricket as a career option.

·          To create the sporting environment for an inclusive network of women players, coaches, employees, volunteers and administrators to contribute to their full potential.

·          To acknowledge and honour the contribution of Indian women’s cricket.

Most women love to watch a good game of cricket. But few play. WCL’s initiative is set to bring in the change and set a new benchmark in India. Perhaps women’s cricket may become more equal and as rewarding as men’s.
