South Korea to hold early presidential election by May 9

Snap presidential elections to determine who will succeed the disgraced former South Korean president Park Geun-hye will take place by May 9, the country’s election commission said. The announcement comes amid a wave of violent clashes of Geun-hye’s supporters and opponents amid protests that have gripped the country’s capital, Seoul. The protests follow the Constitutional Court’s ruling to uphold Park’s impeachment over a bribery scandal. As of Saturday morning, the death toll from the protests climbed to three with at least 80 people being reported as injured.
