Envoys of Tanzania, Ghana, Burundi and Pakistan presented their credentials to the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today (September 19, 2017).

The envoys who presented their credentials were: –

1. His Excellency Mr. Baraka Haran Luvanda, High Commissioner of Tanzania


His Excellency Mr. Michael Aaron Nii Nortey Oquaye, High Commissioner of Ghana

3. Her Excellency Mrs. Stella Bdiriganya, Ambassador of Burundi

4. His Excellency Mr. Sohail Mahmood, High Commissioner of Pakistan

The United Nations General Assembly opens its seventy second session today, Tuesday, 19 September, at 3.00 pm New York time, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The annual general debate will go on till 25 September.

The General Assembly is headed by H.E. Miroslav Lajčak of Slovakia. The theme for the seventy-second session’s general debate will be, “Focusing on People: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet”.

The Assembly President, Mr Lajčak will deliver the keynote opening speech. This will then be followed by Brazilian President Michel Temer, whose country holds the traditional role of first national speaker. He will be followed by United States President Donald Trump, as leader of the host nation.

Smt. Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister, Government of India, will address the UN General Assembly on 23 September 2017.

Ahead of the Debate, which runs through 25 September, UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ will present his annual Report on the work of the Organization. This will be followed by discussions that will define international responses to many of the global challenges of the day, including protracted conflicts, extreme poverty and hunger, and the refugee crisis.

Other highlights include an event on women’s economic empowerment; a ministerial-level Security Council debate, set for Wednesday 20 September, on reform of UN peacekeeping operations; as well as, immediately after the debate, a special meeting of the Assembly to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and a two-day high-level meeting on the UN Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, set for 27-28 September.
