Thailand’s Supreme Court has sentenced former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to 5 years in prison.
Yingluck is accused of negligence relating to a rice subsidy scheme for Thai farmers that resulted in multi-billion-dollar losses to the nation.
She is believed to have fled the country last month. The court session delivered the verdict in her abstention, initially was to have been delivered.
She has said the charges are politically motivated.
