Dear Naresh,

The Trump Administration is launching an all-out attack on asylum—and U.S. leadership.

TELL CONGRESS TO ACT

Between Attorney General Sessions’s speech yesterday and the statement of “principles” released over the weekend, it’s clear that this administration is focused on decimating and violating this country’s moral and legal obligations to refugees seeking asylum. Its latest goal is to pit legalizing the DACA program against protections for asylum seekers.

This is a crisis of leadership. Instead of effectively and humanely addressing the challenges that come with escalating refugee situations, the administration is seeking to prevent people fleeing violence and persecution—including children—from accessing the U.S. asylum system and punishing those who do with prolonged detention in jails and correctional facilities.

Congress should pass the DREAM Act without gutting protections for asylum seekers. It is cruel to pit these vulnerable groups against each other. You can make sure that asylum seekers don’t get left behind or bargained away by making a quick phone call now.

ACT NOW

Sincerely,

Jennifer Quigley

Human Rights First is an independent advocacy and action organization that challenges America to live up to its ideals. We believe American leadership is essential in the struggle for human rights so we press the U.S. government and private companies to respect human rights and the rule of law. When they don’t, we step in to demand reform, accountability and justice. Around the world, we work where we can best harness American influence to secure core freedoms.
