INDIAN COAST GUARD LAUNCHES LARGE SCALE RESCUE OPERATIONS FOR CYCLONE OCKHI

  • Indian Coast Guard has launched a large-scale search and
    rescue operation in the southern peninsula to save shermen
    stranded at sea view Cyclone Ockhi, which has passed Kerala coast
    and heading towards Lakshadweep islands.
    The movement of the depression was closely monitored and as
    it intensied into cyclone, Coast Guard units in Tamil Nadu and
    Kerala were deployed for assistance. Constant liaison was
    maintained with State and local administration to coordinate quick
    response to any emerging situation. Despite inclement weather in
    area, ICG immediately tasked units and ICG ship C-427 rescued a
    sherman from a capsized boat o+ Vizhinjam at 1400 hrs on 30 Nov
    17.
    Presently, Indian Coast Guard has deployed 10 ships to render
    assistance to stranded shermen o+ Tamil Nadu and Kerala coasts.
    In addition, Coast Guard Dornier aircraft and helicopter have been
    carrying out extensive sea-air coordinated search since rst light of
    01 Dec. Out of 26 boats with 113 shermen reported stranded at
    sea, rescue of 12 boats with 71 shermen has been successfully
    coordinated by ICG in near shore areas, with the assistance of local
    sheries authorities. Search and rescue operation is in progress for
    the balance boats.
    The situation is being closely monitored and a high level of
    preparedness is being maintained to augment rescue e+orts.
