Smart Trading India Against Facilitating Poor Quality Imports

December20, 2017 (C) Ravinder Singh ravinderinvent@gmail.com

My first three jobs – 1974 in BST, then one of the largest Steel Tube company in India, 1975BTPS Procurementthen biggest Thermal Power Station, 1976 in Security of LargestCentral Electrical Store then serving half of India – related to QUALITY CONTROL and I didn’t allowed a single Substandard Product.

Though it was Security work in 1976 but I made it Security + Quality, would order ‘Please issue Good Quality products’ – even as all products were approved by DGS&D and Certified by ISI when I believed quality to be poor or told about poor.

Substandard IMPORTS is $100b Annual Liability

More than 40 years later Ministry of Commerce & Industry has no concern about Substandard Products imported in to India which is at least $100b Direct Liability.

Ship Loads of substandard Indian EXPORTS are Rejected by Foreign Customs – Almost no IMPORTS Rejection of substandard products by Indian Customs.

Each BRANDED Product Imported By 10,000 Traders

Ex. Instead of Foreign Brand importing all its products in to India, then Distributing Products to all the Traders in India – India let all the Traders Import Foreign Brand products from any country like Memory cards.

Ø None of Traders have Quality Control Facilities in India and Importing City.

Ø Buy in very Small Quantity at higher cost from Foreign Retailers than Manufacturers.

Ø High Cost of Logistics, Foreign Visits adding to Cost to buy Substandard Goods.

Direct Liability $100b – Indirect Could Be $500b

Direct liability as illustrated in following example is $100b

[Five years ago I purchased 2 LED Lamps at LED Expo of unknown brand are still working, 20 Ordered On Line are mostly fused average 3-4 months, this year purchased 6 Phillips and Havel [@ Rs.120 and Rs.200 each]branded LED Lamps – one fused in 6 months second in 10 months which are supposed to last 10-20 years.]

Indirect Cost $500b

When we Factor in Energy Cost, Health Cost, Replacement Cost, Procurement Cost – it is Five Times the cost of a good quality product.

ü Substandard Imports INDUCES Substandard Indian Manufacturing.

ü Foreign Companies to Establish ‘India Import Offices – Guarantee Quality’
