Diaz-Canel replaces Raul Castro

Miguel Diaz-Canel as the country’s new president, ending nearly 60 years of leadership by the Castro family.

Diaz-Canel took over from Raul Castro in a National Assembly session in the capital, Havana, on Thursday. He had previously served as first vice president.

Octogenarian Raul Castro, along with his older brother Fidel, spearheaded the 1959 revolution, which toppled the pro-US government and established a socialist state.
