FRANKFURTER BUCHMESSE FILM AWARDS
New prize honours best illustrated book on a film-related subject
Opulently illustrated biographies of actors, making-of chronicles, beautifully photographed volumes on set design, silent-era movie palaces, exotic costumes or breath-taking stunts –- such books visually capture the magic moments that define cinema, making it possible to take a look behind the scenes. To recognise the many ways that publishing houses showcase the film industry’s achievements, this year the Frankfurter Buchmesse together with MGIP Motovun Group of International Publishers and THE ARTS+ will begin awarding a prize for the best illustrated book on a film-related subject.
The criteria for awarding the prize are originality of the underlying idea, outstanding design and production, and noteworthy adaptation of the content to book form. Nominated books must have been published after August 2016 and must still be in print. Publishing houses from any country may submit titles for consideration. The deadline for submissions is 8 June 2018. The jury will select a shortlist of five titles which will be announced at the end of August.
The prize is part of the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards which will be given in three categories for the first time. Apart from the prize for the best illustrated book on a film-related subject, which will be presented by a jury member from Motovun Group, the Award for the Best International Literary Adaptation will be given in two categories: one for the adaptation of a literary work, the second for the adaptation of a book for children or young adults. The awards ceremony for the Frankfurter Buchmesse Film Awards will take place on Thursday, 11 October 2018, at THE ARTS+ event space.

Since 2006, the Frankfurter Buchmesse has co-hosted “Books at Berlinale”. Part of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, this pitching session allows publishers and agents to present material with potential for screen adaptation to international producers. Since 2016, the Frankfurter Buchmesse has presented “A Book is a Film is a Game” on the Thursday of the Book Fair, bringing together representatives of the book, film and games industry for a day of panel discussions, pitching sessions, workshops, matchmaking sessions and networking.
