The aim of this talk is to demystify terms associated with our online presence. In order to meaningfully participate in the current debate around how the Internet intersects and in many ways directs various aspects of our lives, it is critical to understand the digital terminology that has now become commonplace. Informed user understanding of this language can empower the person to take control of the narrative versus being controlled by the same narrative if this lexicon mystifies them.

The focus will be on the new and sometimes arcane vocabulary associated with the new digital technologies, which only the expert and the initiated understand. Language becomes an instrument of privileging knowledge and limiting understanding. It is important that we de-mystify digital jargon, narrow the gap between technology and its understanding among citizens and societies. An effort will be made to unpack concepts such as algorithms, blockchains, machine-learning, big data and artificial intelligence and explore their impact in different dimensions.

Opening remarks by Shri Amitabh Kant – CEO, NITI Aayog (TBC)

Metamorphoses is a modest effort to try and bridge the gap between digital technologies, which are transforming our lives, and our understanding of their multiple dimensions. It will unfold in a series of nine interactions covering different aspects of the digital revolution.

This series will examine the impacts of digital technologies on the human psyche and on societies – exploring ways in which some of the negative elements may be mitigated. There will be a peep into the future – of what machine learning and artificial intelligence may bring to human experience – and the moral and ethical dilemma associated with these. It will also delve into issues relating to data privacy and cyber security as well as the emerging legal regime to regulate this critical domain.
