Bhumi Adhikar Andolan INVITATION

Bhumi Adhikar Andolan

Misplaced Priorities or Plain Megalomania?

Costs and Consequences of Bullet Train

August 2, 2018 | 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM

Deputy Speaker Hall, Constitution Club of India New Delhi

The proposed High Speed Rail Corridor (popularly called the Bullet Train) from Mumbai to Ahmedabad is to scythe its way through the tribal and agricultural tracts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The farmers of the area are opposed to the Project as their fertile lands will be taken away. Additionally and more importantly, there is a rising discontent among the masses, given that more urgent developmental and social sector issues have been ignored and deprived of funds. Within the railway sector itself, the need of the hour is the up-gradation and improvement of existing tracks, the introduction of swifter services usingIndian technology, and improved safety measures, all of which are being ignored.

Given the existing statistics on rail and air traffic between the two cities, the very economic viability of the proposed Bullet Train Project is under the scanner.  Contrary to the claims that the terms of the loan are very borrower-friendly, it is likely that the burden of loan repayment will be very substantial in the light of the deteriorating rupee-yen exchange rate etc. Almost all political parties have come together in support of the masses opposing the bullet trainproject over lack of transparency and unclear terms in overall project including the repayment schedule for the loan from JICA.

India needs money for its crumbling cities, public transport, and other basic necessities and not a whopping 1.1 Billion USD for a 508 kms long Bullet train. From the optics of it the project is primarily to satisfy the megalomania and pipe dream of the ruling dispensation. This is a bullet for the people of India and will only kill and maim.

It is in this context that we invite you to a day-long Consultation on August 2nd, 2018 at Deputy Speaker Hall, Constitution Club to discuss upon the various facets of the project, ongoing violations, assault on democratic norms; andextend solidarity to the masses struggling to protect their rights over land and forests against the Bullet Train Project. Various tribal and farmer organisations working in Maharashtra and Gujarat which have been opposing the Bullet Train Project will be participating in the meeting. The organizations include the Maharashtra Rajya Kisan Sabha, Kashtakari Sanghatana, Bhumi Adhikar Andolan Maharashtra, Shoshit Jan Andolan, Gujarat Khedut Samaj, Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti, National Alliance of Peoples’ Movements and othes

We call upon activists, advocates, journalists, academics, researchers and everyone to come and join us and build a movement against this monstrosity.
