Nowhere in the world Sanitation is inspired by global icon like Mahatma Gandhi because Sanitation is Basic Public service in all human habitations.100 years ago there were very few Brick & Mortar homes – even fewer Water Supply, Electricity or Sewer Lines.

Now Electrified Habitations – Need Quality Water Supply & Underground Sewer. Septic Tank in Every Home is No Progress and Poor Quality Water Unacceptable.

In1960 most urban areas like Delhi had PIT LATERINES [In Timarpur On Back Side There Used to be Two Feet High Platforms and in between a Rusted Iron Pot Which Collected all the Waste] which used to Cleaned MANUALLY Everyday from service lane. Old Delhi had roadside Open Sewer cum Drains on both sides of the narrow roads. There was little or no ADVANCED WATER SUPPLY and UNDERGROUND SEWER LINES.

I have seen around 1960 Water Was Supplied in Old Delhi City [Which had Community Water Supply & Toilets] – in Goat Skin Water Tanks carried by Humans while CPWD built Sarojini Nagar and DLF Built Hauz Khas had advanced Water Supply and Sewer Lines from day one.

Village well or Pond was source of Water for the habitation. I remember in Hauz Khas in 1962 there was a Well next to a manmade Pond in front of Siri Fort Auditorium – it had Soft Water but in the Shahpur village Hand Pumps or Wells had very hard corrosive water. Woman of the village used to get Drinking Water from this well.

In 1964 DJB dug a Deep Tube-well without testing and turned out to Very Hard Water impossible to Drink – 40 GPS – 40 Horse Power – good enough to supply ground water to most of Hauz Khas colony. It damaged water meters, GI Tanks – Though water supply in Hauz Khas initially was 24X7 direct Chlorinated Potable Yamuna water supply but to maintain pressure Toilets were served by 250 L tanks.

Gradually water supply & pressure and QUALITY SUFFERED andresidents had to make HUGE INVESTMENTS ON UNDER GROUND & OVERHEAD TANKS, PUMPING & ADDITION WATER LINES CONNECTED OVER HEAD TANKS, FOR 30 YEARS WATER TREATMENT TO NOW RO WATER.

From 1960-70 I had seen Sparkling Clean Water at Okhla Barrage – Wazirabad Barrage was built much later to draw water for Water Treatment Plants. While no Storage Dam was built on Yamuna River – Haryana and UP expanded Canal networks and Diverted almost 100% of Water in the River at the Tajewala Barrage around 260 km upstream of Wazirabad Barrage. In the absence of Fresh Water releases from Tajewala – Yamuna River carries mainly Sewage of Haryana & UP. In the meanwhile Supply from Bhakra was increased and Ganga Canal started Supply to Delhi. Storage Dams to be built shall Double Water availability in Delhi.

While Water Supply and Requirements has increased 10 Times but No TRUNK SEWER was built in South Delhi after Nauroji Nagar to Okhla in 1960. Most of Delhi has OPEN SEWER CUM Drains – at many places on both sides of Roads.

In 1957 Hauz Khas had International Standard Water Supply & Sewer System – Worst Today. SEWER LINES WERE 6 FEET BELOW GROUND LEVEL – HOME SEWER LINES 3 Feet Below Ground Level – BUT SUBSTANDARD SEWER LINES REPLACED IN RECENT TIMES ARE AT HOME SEWER LINE LEVEL GET CHOKED & BACK FLOWS EVERYDAY – SOON SEWAGE TO FLOW IN OPEN.

Delhi Priority to Invest in QUALITY Water Supply & Underground SEWER System.
