NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DRAMA INTRODUCES “EBRAHIM ALKAZI CHAIR”
NEW DELHI, 04th October, 2018: The National School of Drama (NSD) today announced establishing “EBRAHIM ALKAZI CHAIR” after the doyen of Indian theatre and former NSD Director Sh. Ebrahim Alkazi, honoring his contribution to the field of theatre in India and role in developing the premier theater institution.
The scheme was approved by the society of National School of Drama earlier this year. After the approval of this title, a committee was constituted by National School of Drama to choose an eminent theatre personality for the “EBRAHIM ALKAZI CHAIR” for one year. The proposed committee, after deliberation, decided to offer the chair to veteran theatre practitioner and educator Prof. Mohan Maharishi for one year from the day of his acceptance, with a fee of Rupees one lakh per month toward remuneration/ honorarium. The committee has also recommended that Prof. Maharishi, if he undertakes any research and publishes any book(s) during his tenure on chair, may give proper credit to NSD in his all publication/research work.
The National School of Drama was established in 1959 and from 1962 Sh. Ebrahim Alkazi became the head of the institute and he served the institute till 1977. It is an independent autonomous body under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.
Under the visionary guidance and leadership of Sh. Ebrahim Alkazi, the National School of Drama flourished to become an institution of repute, producing several eminent theatre personalities, actors, designers, and other masters of the art form. Sh. Ebrahim Alkazi took the institute to a height of becoming the top most theatre institute in Asia. During the tenure of Sh. Ebrahim Alkazi as head of the institute, he was instrumental in molding people’s idea of theatre education who still regard the National School of Drama as the best institution to study theatre. Sh. Ebrahim Alkazi as a role model among theatre practitioners and theatre activists and after so many years, he reigns the mind of people.
The National School of Drama has also approved the scheme of “ARTIST IN RESIDENCE” at NSD. A committee was constituted to select a name for the scheme from among the leading theatre practitioners. The members of the committee deliberated on the names and decided to invite Dr. B. Jayashree, a very senior aluminous of National School of Drama and eminent theatre personality, as the “ARTIST IN RESIDENCE” at NSD for a period of three months from the date of her acceptance and an honorarium of Rupees eighty thousand per month. Dr. Jayashree has devoted her entire life to promote theatre arts in the country and abroad. During her stay as “ARTIST IN RESIDENCE” at NSD, the students, faculty, staff and artists of Repertory Company and Theatre in Education Company of National School of Drama, as well as visiting faculty and other theatre practitioners will be benefited from her experience. She will be provided with an office and working facilities at NSD___________________________________________________________________
