Typhoon Kong-rey is battering Japan’s south. At least 8 people have been injured. It’s the second storm to hit the region in less than a week.
The typhoon is moving north from Okinawa. It has caused blackouts in some areas. About 10-thousand households are currently without power in the prefecture.
Officials in one town have ordered residents to evacuate to an emergency shelter. In the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, nearly 20,000 households have no power.
Heavy downpours are also affecting parts of the southwestern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.
