Mike Pompeo says the United States will initiate proceedings to withdraw from a bilateral arms control treaty with Russia unless the country complies with the terms of the pact within 60 days.
US President Donald Trump has said he wants to pull his country out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty that was signed with the former Soviet Union in 1987.
Pompeo told reporters in Brussels on Tuesday that Russia has deployed a missile with a range in excess of that permitted in the INF Treaty. He said its range makes it a direct menace to Europe.
Pompeo added that the United States has raised the issue of Russia’s noncompliance with the treaty at least 30 times since 2013, but that the violations continue.
