As an UNGC local arm, GCNI has been acting as a country level platform in providing a robust platform for Indian businesses, academic institutions and civil society organizations to join hands for strengthening responsible business practices. We and our members remain fully committed to the ‘10 Principles of United Nations Global Compact’ in areas of Human Rights, Labour, Environment and Anti-corruption and the 17 ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ adopted in September 2015, by all 193 Member States of the United Nations including India in order to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect our planet. Among the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 is “Gender Equality”is the key priority for India which by reducing gender discrimination at work place. It aims to promote empowerment of women by ensuring their full and effective participation and equal opportunity of leadership at all levels of decision making.
As you are aware that there are several of reasons to strive for gender equality in the society. The Economic Survey, 2018 indicates that, the female Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) is 50% lower than male LFPR. The Ministry of Women and Child Development highlighted that women have limited access to skilling and 126 million people constituting 95% of women employed are in the informal sector. A recent International Monetary Fund report (2018) signified that an increase in women participation in the workforce to the same extent as men can increase India’s GDP by 27%.
Recognising these imperatives, UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 5) addressed the need for “Gender Equality” through a set of high level goals. I am pleased to inform you we are hosting our 2nd Gender Equality Summit 2019 (GES 2019) on March 01, 2019 at New Delhi on the theme “Preparing Women for the Future of Work”. The highlights of the Summit includes a thought leadership piece that will be brought out in collaboration with our knowledge partner, Deloitte on “ Preparing Women for the 4th Industrial Revolution and presenting the 2st Best Practices Awards on Gender Equality in India.
Considering your commitment towards achieving SDGs especially Gender Equality in India, I am writing this with a special request:
