Myanmar’s first International car show opens in Yangon.

Myanmar’s first international car show opens in Yangon. It comes in response to booming demand for new vehicles in a nation that has, until now, relied on used imports from abroad.

Japan’s Suzuki Motor has a head start in Myanmar with a 60 percent market share.

Toyota, Ford and China’s Dongfeng Motor are among rivals rolling out their latest models in a bid to enter into Suzuki’s lead, the report said.

Six automakers from countries including Japan, the US and China are taking part in the Yangon International Motor Show. Japan’s Suzuki Motor has a head start in Myanmar with a commanding 60 percent market share.

It was the first international firm to build cars in the country. The government restricted imports of second-hand cars in 2017.

Toyota, Ford and China’s Dongfeng Motor are among rivals rolling out their latest models in a bid to eat into Suzuki’s lead.

Over 17,500 new cars were sold in Myanmar in 2018. Although small by international standards, that’s more than double the previous year’s sales.
