Heavy snow or rain along with thunderstorms and hailstorms is predicted over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Delhi.

A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) which is currently located over Afghanistan is progressing towards north India. The WD along with its cyclonic circulation is expected to bring snow, rain and thunderstorms in northern, central and western India from Saturday to Sunday.

Owing to the WD heavy snow or rain along with thunderstorms is predicted over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Widespread rain and thunderstorms along with hailstorms is forecast in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Delhi. Similarly, scattered rain and thunderstorms is possible over Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra will also experience isolated rain along with thunderstorms.

The convergence of moist easterly winds, over south India, from Bay of Bengal and westerly winds from the Arabian Sea will bring isolated rain in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. Isolated rain with thunderstorms is possible over Tamil Nadu.

Arunachal Pradesh will receive isolated snow or rain during this forecast period.

Maximum temperatures are ‘cooler than normal’ over northern, central, eastern and north eastern India and warmer over southern and western India. Minimum temperatures are ‘cooler than normal’ over eastern and north eastern India and warmer over northern, central, western and southern India.

Air qualities will be ‘poor or very poor’ across the country especially around major cities like Delhi.

Sunday and beyond

A WD approaching north India will cause widespread snow or rain along with thunderstorms, hailstorms in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The peak of the snowfall activity will last over the weekend and until Monday after which the intensity of the WD will subside.

The Met team has forecast that Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are likely to receive scattered rain with thunderstorms and hail. Similarly, isolated rain is possible in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Odisha, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh are also on cards to witnessing isolated rain during this forecast period.

As the WD moves eastwards, snow and rain will pour over northeastern states from Monday to Wednesday. Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will experience isolated snow and rain due to similar weather conditions.

Maximum temperatures are ‘cooler than normal’ over northern, central, eastern, western and north eastern India and warmer over southern India. Minimum temperatures are ‘warmer than normal’ all over India.

Air qualities will be ‘poor or very poor’ over the country especially around major cities like Delhi.
