Rinne: No-deal Brexit “very obvious”

Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne (SDP) says he thinks it’s now “very obvious” that Britain will crash out of the European Union without a deal.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Helsinki with the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli, Rinne told reporters that “the situation in Britain is quite a mess now.”

“We don’t know what is happening there. It seems very obvious that we are not getting Brexit with an agreement, and we have here in Finland and also at the European Union level done work that we can manage that kind of situation.”

Britain is supposed to leave the EU at the end of October, but a series of defeats in Parliament for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he tried to stop MPs from securing legislation to halt a no-deal divorce have left the situation around Brexit unclear.

Johnson has said he would call a general election, but he would also need a two-thirds majority in the British Parliament to do that. Meanwhile, shifting loyalties within his own party, defections to the opposition and seemingly endless plotting in the media by current and former political heavyweights has done nothing to clarify what exactly is going on in UK politics.

EP President Sassoli agreed with Rinne’s comments in Helsinki today, saying that “everything seems to be rather confused.”

Finland is the current holder of the rotating six-month Presidency of the European Council.
