Bianca Andreescu upsets Serena Williams to clinch US Open women’s singles title
Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu stunned Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 to grab the US Open 2019 women’s singles title. The 19-year-old Andreescu becomes the first Canadian singles player to win a Grand Slam event. With the victory, Andreescu also jumps into the top 10 in the WTA rankings. The 19-year-old teen is also the first woman to win the trophy at Flushing Meadows in her tournament debut in the Open era. After open era, which began in 1968, professionals were allowed to participate in the majors.
Meanwhile, Serena Williams, has lost each of her last four Grand Slam finals, all with a chance to tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
Serena had defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1 in the semi-final to reach her 10th US Open final while Andreescu beat Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 7-6, 7-5 to reach the final.
Title clash of the Men’s Singles scheduled tomorrow. In the Men’s Singles final, 18-time Grand Slam singles champion Rafael Nadal of Spain will take on Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York in the wee hours. The 33-year-old Spaniard will play for his fourth US Open title while for Medvedev, it will be his first Grand Slam final.
