Empress Emerita’s breast cancer surgery done

Imperial Household Agency said Japan’s Empress Emerita Michiko successfully completed surgery on Sunday afternoon. She is staying at the University of Tokyo Hospital to have a case of breast cancer treated.

An operation for stage-1 cancer began on Sunday morning, with the patient under general anesthesia. It took about four hours to finish the surgery..

A checkup in July revealed a tumorous lump in the mammary gland of her left breast. The diagnosis reportedly showed no clear signs of it spreading.

The Empress Emerita was admitted to the institution on Saturday. She may be able to leave the hospital in several days.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito entered her hospital room ahead of the surgery on Sunday. He and the couple’s only daughter, Sayako Kuroda, accompanied the Empress Emerita to the operating theater.

The Imperial Household Agency plans to announce the results of the surgery later on Sunday.
