Khawaf-Herat railway project

Herat people are pleased for signing of the fourth phase of the Herat– Khaf railway construction agreement between president of #Afghanistan and #Kazakh ambassador. Herat residents say, “This project will create jobs and economic growth for the country.

Khawaf-Herat railway is 130km long, of which 70km is inside Iran soil and 60km inside Afghanistan. With the completion of this project, Afghanistan can enjoy a railway for the first time linking Turkey and Europe with Iran ports in the Persian Gulf. Herat provincial governor, Abdul Qayum Rahimi.

Iran has almost finished its part of the Khaf-#Herat railway project. When finished, the railway would provide #Afghanistan with a rail route to #Europe and the #IndianOcean.

Minister of Public Works @yama__yari with @UNOPS and MoF @aidafghanistan to discuss how to streamline execution of three road #connectivityprojects funded by Italy in #Herat.

Uzbekistan will put $500 million USD towards the project, Finance Ministry spokesman Ajmal Abdulrahimzai told TOLOnews.

“During the Tashkent Summit, Uzbekistan announced it would fund $500 million for part of Herat-Mazar railway project,” he said.

Afghanistan Railway Authority meanwhile said the project will cost $1.8 billion USD in total and that the Afghan government is looking to secure more funding from other countries.

According to the authority, once complete, the railway line will be an important transit route between China, Europe, Russia, Central Asian countries and South Asian countries.
