Flood death toll touches 53 in Indonesia
Floods in Indonesia, the death toll climbed to 53 today, with one person still missing after flooding hit the Jakarta capital region.
More than 1,70,000 people took refuge in shelters across the massive urban conglomeration following the floods. Torrential rains that started on New Year’s Eve, unleashed flash floods and landslides in the region. Neighbouring Lebak at the south end of Java island was also affected.
Meanwhile, the government said yesterday that it would start cloud seeding to the west of the capital to prevent approaching rainfall from hitting the region. Jakarta is regularly hit by floods during the rainy season, which started in late November.
