Arrest made persons for their role in Ukrainian plane crash: Iran

Iran, Judiciary Spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said today that some people have been arrested for their role in the crash of a Ukrainian plane that Tehran said was accidentally hit by an Iranian missile. This was reported by the Al Arabiya news. Details are awaited. 

President Hassan Rouhani announced, in a televised speech today, that Iran will punish all those responsible for the unintentional shooting down of a Ukrainian passenger plane, adding that the tragic event would be investigated thoroughly. He said, Iranian armed forces admitting their mistake is a good first step and assured people that it will not happen again and further said, his government was accountable to Iranian and other nations who lost lives in the plane crash.

Gholam-Hossein Esmaili, the Judiciary’s spokesman, said on Tuesday that special commissions had been set up by the General Staff of the Armed Forces to investigate the tragedy.

“Thorough investigations have been launched and a number of individuals have been arrested,” said the official, without specifying exactly how many people were in detention.

The Judiciary Organization of the Armed Forces has been tasked with probing the data on the aircraft’s black boxes with the help of experts from the General Staff of the Armed Forces and the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran as well as electronic warfare professionals, the spokesman said.

Esmaili further noted that efforts would be made to shed light on all dimensions of the incident and to ensure that justice is served.
