Commemorate 50 years of Earth Day

SENIOR INDIAN ARTISTS COME FORWARD TO RAISE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

  • Earth Day Network commits to raise environmental awareness globally through

 ‘Artists for the Earth’

  • To commemorate 50 years of Earth Day, senior artists in India use the stage and their voice to spread environmental awareness

(Delhi, January 13, 2020) Earth Day Network is a global environmental organization that grew out of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.  Today, in the year of its 50th anniversary, it works with over 75,000 organizations in around 195 countries to take the environmental movement forward.

#ArtistsfortheEarth is one of Earth Day Network’s campaigns.  Its aims to engage the power of art to heighten awareness and increase the relevance of the environment in everyday lives of people.

In India, several top musicians have come forward in support of the campaign.  These include Oscar nominee Bombay Jayashri, Grammy awardee Ricky Kej, the doyen of Indian dance Dr Uma Sharma, Kaushiki Chakraborty whose voice appeals to millions and several others.

The artists have worked through their networks to ensure that at some 2,000 sought-after concerts, organizers make a direct appeal from the stage to the assembled audiences to ‘Go Green’ in support of Earth Day Network’s campaigns. This includes some of India’s largest and best known festivals such as the Swami Haridas Tansen Sangeet Nritya Mahotsava in the capital city, Delhi.   During the ongoing season in Chennai, this will reach an audience of 100,000. Later this month, Ricky and his group will perform before an audience of some 10,000 at the upcoming Jaipur Literature Festival.

In addition, artists have convinced organizers to ban single-use plastic entering their spaces and to replace the traditional presentation of flower bouquets to performers with indoor house plants that help purify the air.  This has already been done at hundreds of concert spaces.

Artists have also reached out to thousands of fans with special concerts and renditions on environmental issues as well as via their very active social media sites.

Earth Day Network will continue to build on this powerful means of communications with artists playing a pivotal role in our campaign. To know more about the global campaign, please click here.
