Naresh, today I am proud to endorse my friend Joe Biden for President of the United States.
I’ve known Joe for many years and across a number of settings: making hard decisions about war and peace in the Situation Room as Vice President under President Obama, building coalitions and getting things done as a Senator, and sharing quiet moments with his constituents. Wherever he goes, Joe’s the same person. He’s passionate about standing up for families and working to make their lives better.
More than ever, these tumultuous times reveal how desperately we need level-headed, solutions-oriented leadership. We need someone who listens to scientists, who acts with kindness and compassion, and who recognizes that America can and must lead the world in responding to this pandemic.
Joe Biden will be that president, and I hope you’ll join me in doing everything I can to get him elected in November. If you’re with me — and with Joe — make a donation right now:Donate nowThe world today looks very different than the one so many of us fought for in 2016. Like many of you, I’m concerned — not only about our current health crisis, but about the deep-seated problems in our democracy that it lays bare, from inequity in our health care system to the high-wire act demanded of too many working parents.
When I think about who I want leading us through this challenging time, there is no question: Joe Biden has the bold ideas, the smart plans, and most of all, the character to tackle this crisis and any others that come our way.
I am proud to call him a friend and colleague, and I will be even prouder to call him President of the United States. But first, we have to do all that we can to get to a win in November. Chip in right now to show Joe that you’re ready to do the work.
Naresh, I’d be honored if you joined my campaign

| Hey there. I’m Joe Biden, and I’m writing to you about a truly special moment in our campaign.|
This afternoon, Secretary Clinton announced she’s endorsing us. I’m so proud to have her support.
I got to see first-hand what an extraordinary leader Hillary was in the U.S. Senate. When I was Vice President and she was Secretary of State, we would often meet for breakfast meetings at the Vice President’s residence when we were both in town. That’s where I got to see why she was such a powerful, respected and admired voice all across the world. Hillary has long had the courage to speak out against the worst impulses in our country and the world — and to stand up for the best in us.
Hillary’s candidacy was historic. It is long overdue that we have a woman in the White House. I’ve already made public that my Vice President and partner in campaigning and governing will be a woman. For me, it’s the obvious, necessary and right choice.
In 2016, you and millions of others built one of the most impressive operations our party and country has ever seen. Volunteers, donors, and grassroots supporters that were passionate and organized and worked day in and day out for Hillary.
I know, for some of you, you are hesitant to get involved again on a campaign. I understand that. I am going to do everything I can to earn your support and your trust.
And I’m here to tell you that you’re not only welcome as part of this campaign: you’re needed.
The only way that we’ll defeat Donald Trump is with a broad coalition of folks working together to win what I have been calling a battle for the soul of our nation.
I’m not here to ask you for money — I know first I have to earn it. So I’m asking you to think about what is at stake, give me a chance, and join my campaign.I’M IN FOR JOE’S CAMPAIGN ➞This endorsement means a lot. I was so proud to support Hillary in 2016, and it means a lot that she’s supporting me now.
If you join me, we can win the battle for the soul of the nation. And by the way, when I say that, I’m not being nostalgic. I’m not trying to take us back to a country that never existed. The foundational principles of our country — that all men and women are created equal — are ones that we’ve never lived up to. But we’ve never given up trying to live up to them.
It is not enough to “go back” to anything. We have to take immediate, bold action to tackle the climate crisis. We have to relieve a generation of the crushing burden of student debt. We have to make healthcare a right and not a privilege. And to get there, we’re going to need millions of grassroots supporters to take action right away.
If you join our campaign, we will not just defeat Donald Trump. We will not just win the battle for the soul of our nation. We will transform it too.
To close, I will humbly ask:
Will you join my campaign today? I’d be honored if you did.Thank you for everything,

North Korea broke a two-week hiatus in releasing directives personally signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un yesterday, Daily NK has learned.
In normal times, Kim reportedly released these directives every Wednesday or Thursday to provincial party committees and government agencies, according to a Daily NK source in the country.
Suspicions about something amiss with the North Korean leader have further been sparked by the fact that the format and tone of the Apr. 29 directive is different than before.
While past directives usually contained seven or more specific orders, the Apr. 29 document contained only three orders.
“The document released on Apr. 9, for example, had a total of 10 orders,” Daily NK’s source in the country explained.
The Apr. 29 directive’s content was also more broad than usual, repeating familiar themes such as emphasis on the nation providing support for the construction of the Pyongyang General Hospital; a call to “energize” the activities of soldiers and the ordinary people; and ordering the “timely sowing of seeds” by the country’s agricultural workers.
Past directives were usually formatted so that the orders Kim had made verbally were listed along with the dates in parentheses denoting when they were handed down, but the Apr. 29 directive failed to follow this format.
Moreover, none of the orders in the directive reflected Kim’s responses to proposals made by government agencies, which has usually been a feature of these documents.
“No one in North Korea is allowed to reproduce the tone of Kim’s statements, which may explain why the directive is different than usual,” a former high-level North Korean government official told Daily NK. “If Kim has indeed relinquished his leadership duties over this period, it’s possible we’ll see various areas of the government move to fill the ‘governance gap.’”
North Korean government officials who saw the directive on Apr. 29 think the tone and format is strange, but are refraining from publicly linking it with speculation surrounding Kim’s ill health.
“A lot of people in Pyongyang hear news from the outside world, so they know that rumors are spreading [internationally] about Kim’s illness,” Daily NK’s source in North Korea said.
“That doesn’t mean, however, that people will voice their opinions about such rumors out loud,” he added.

EU opens new legal case against Warsaw over ‘muzzling judges’
29 Apr, 2020 15:40
The European Union’s executive on Wednesday started a new legal case against the Polish government over what it said was the muzzling of judges. Brussels has long accused the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party of undermining Polish democracy by increasing direct state control over the courts, media and civic society. The party rejects the charge.
The European Commission said it was giving Poland two months to address its concerns about a law introduced earlier this year that would allow to punish judges who criticize the government’s reforms of the judicial system.
“There are clear risks that the provisions regarding the disciplinary regime against judges can be used for political control of the content of judicial decisions,” said Vera Jourova, the Czech member of the executive Commission who is responsible for upholding the EU’s democratic values.
Should Warsaw refuse to budge, the Commission would sue it in the European Court of Justice, which could eventually lead to hefty fines as well as a court order telling the Polish government to change tack, Reuters said.

SAS plan to make 5,000 employees redundant
Published tisdag 28 april
Scandinavian airline SAS says 5,000 employees will be given notice as the coronavirus has seen demand for air travel collapse.
The move will see 40 percent of the airline’s workforce lose their jobs, including 1,900 employees in Sweden.
SAS CEO Rickard Gustafson says SAS predicts the current collapse in demand for air travel to continue throughout the year and spread into next year. Not until 2022 does he foresee a return to pre-virus levels of demand for flights.
However, should demand rise quicker than expected, he says SAS has the ability to rescind its redundancies as there is a six-month notice before they take effect.

Taiwan security director says Kim Jong Un is sick, contingency plans in place for power vacuum

TAIPEI Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB) director on Thursday (April 30) said that North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un is “sick” and there are contingency plans in place in the event of a power vacuum in the hermit kingdom.
During a meeting of the Legislative Yuan on Thursday, the NSB provided a presentation on the status of the national intelligence work and the international situation amid the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Tsai Shih-ying asked NSB Director-General Chiu Kuo-cheng if communist China’s recent propaganda bluster and military exercises around Taiwan mean that it is trying to project power amid the outbreak or that it is planning for a military confrontation with Taiwan.
Chiu said that after reviewing media reports, accounts from special agents, and information from diplomatic allies, it is possible that China is looking to create a conflict, reported CNA. However, he emphasized that China’s military has always been very conservative and it currently appears to be wanting to emphasize that its military has not been affected by the epidemic.
Given recent media reports that Kim was gravely ill or even deceased, Tsai then asked Chiu about the portly leader’s current health status. Chiu responded by simply saying he is “sick” , according to the report.
When Tsai pressed further by asking “he’s sick, but is he still alive?” Chiu laughed but did not respond to the question.
Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Lo Chih-cheng then asked Chiu if there were any contingency plans in the event there was a power vacuum in North Korea after Kim’s death. Chiu responded that the NSB is at the ready.
KMT Chairman Chiang Chi-chen (江啟臣) then asked if Chiu could provide more detailed information about the situation in North Korea. Chiu responded that the NSB has relevant information, but it would be necessary to do so behind closed doors because if it was discussed publicly, the source could be compromised.
Chiu also pointed out that according to the findings of the study of the communist country by the NSB, no matter how turbulent the politics may be, there may be a short period of integration and struggle. As to whether there would be large-scale military activation and mobilization, he emphasized that North Korea is very closed off, with nuclear bombs, missiles, and other armaments.
Chiu said that If there is a “situation,” not only Taiwan but also South Korea and Japan would be in the scope of areas affected.
