The 7.0 magnitude tremor, about 17km (11 miles) from the shore, was reportedly felt as far away as Istanbul and Athens in Greece. There was no word on casualties but images from the Turkish city of Izmir showed buildings that had collapsed

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said all government institutes have sprung into action to help the city.

“We stand with all our citizens affected by the earthquake with all means possible. All our respective institutes and ministers have been mobilised,” he said.

An earthquake of 7.0 on Richter Scale struck eastern Turkey last evening, killing 34 people in Elazig province and four in the neighbouring province of Malatya. More than 1,600 others were hurt, Turkey’s AFAD disaster authority said.

Much of the damage occurred in and around Turkey’s Aegean resort city of Izmir, which has three million residents and is filled with high-rise apartment blocks. Rescue teams supported by thousands of emergency workers from other provinces and by hundreds of volunteers had pulled 45 people from under the rubble since the quake, AFAD disaster authority said.

Some of the world’s strongest earthquakes have been registered along a fault line that runs across Turkey to Greece. In 1999, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s northwest, killing more than 17,000 people, including 1,000 in Istanbul.

Multiple buildings have been destroyed in the Turkish cities of Izmir, Bornova and Bayrakli, a government official said.

34 people had died and 804 were injured in the province of Izmir. On Greek Island Samos, two teenagers were killed one boy and one girl.

Rescue officials are working to rescue survivors from the rubble of several buildings. AFAD until now has announced 24 deaths with over 800 injured during the catastrophe that occurred on Friday.

Izmir Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger told reporters that four buildings were completely destroyed in the earthquake, and 70 were rescued from the rubble.

The death toll in Turkey from a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Seferihisar district in the western province of Izmir rose to 24, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.

Greece’s #Dodecanese Islands were rattled, with the tremor being felt even in the capital of #Athens. Residents in #Samos and other islands have reportedly had to flee their homes due to flooding and rockfalls. High-tide warnings have been put in place and residents have been told to stay away from the coast. No injuries have so far been reported on the island.

The tremors occurred in the Aegean Sea at a depth of 16.5 kilometers (10.3 miles) but were felt across Turkey’s third-largest city and as far away as Istanbul in the north.

At least 804 people have been injured in Turkey, said the country’s disaster agency. Dozens were saved by rescue teams using diggers and helicopters to search for survivors.

A total of 196 aftershocks have been recorded, 23 of which were over 4.0 magnitude, the agency added. Search and rescue operations continue in 17 buildings, four of which have collapsed, said Murat Kurum, Turkey’s Environment and Urbanization Minister.
