UK Surgeon unlawful stored bones of patients

A world-renowned surgeon allegedly illegally kept and stored the #bones of over 5,000 patients at his house, bringing a whole new meaning to having #skeletons in the closet.⁣

A leaked #investigation’s findings show that Derek McMinn collected the bones of at least 5,224 patients – potentially including children – he operated on since 1990. He did this without their consent and despite the fact he has no license to store #body parts.⁣

McMinn has treated politicians, sports stars and #celebrities. His collection of body parts came to authorities’ attention during a routine #pathologyaudit in March 2019, when 20 pots of bones were found in a storage area at #Edgbaston Hospital in #Birmingham. Senior managers arranged for #McMinn’s staff to take the pots to his address the next day.⁣

Officially, #human tissue should be treated as clinical waste by hospital staff, who should ensure it is binned and taken for incineration. A #hospitalinsider claimed everything had been covered-up, as McMinn was such a prize asset to the hospital because he generated enormous amounts of money.⁣

When authorities asked McMinn to justify his actions, he sent an email to the hospital stating the samples were to be used for research and admitted he had been collecting tissue for 25 years. McMinn was suspended, as he did not have any approval for research.⁣
