PM dedicate to nation all weather world’s longest high altitude tunn9el ‘Atal Tunnel’ on 2020 Oct03.
PM Modi inaugurated the strategically important, all-weather Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh that connects Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti valley and reduces travel time to Leh (in the Union Territory of Ladakh) by up to five hours.
Prime Minister said, Atal Tunnel will not only benefit the people of Himachal Pradesh, but will also be a lifeline for Leh-Ladakh. He said, for the government there is nothing bigger than the safety and security of the people.
India Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicates to the nation the world’s longest high altitude tunnel, the Atal Tunnel, at Rohtang.
It is built at an altitude of 10000 feet. The 9.2 km long highway tunnel has been constructed at an estimated cost of 3,200 crore rupees.
The tunnel will prove to be beneficial for the development of the tribal area of Lahaul-Spiti which remains isolated for six months due to heavy snowfall at Rohtang Pass. AIR correspondent reports from Rohtang in Lahul Spiti.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was also present on this occasion.
Prime Minister said it’s a historic day as not only Atal Ji’s dream has been fulfilled today but also the people of Himachal Pradesh. Emphasising the importance of connectivity, Mr Modi said it has direct connection with development. He said connectivity in border areas is directly related to security of the country.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jai Ram Thakur, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Singh Thakur, Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane. Speaking on the occasion, the Defence Minister praised the Border Road Organisation for completing the project in time without increasing the cost. He said the tunnel will give a strategic boost to the defence forces also.
With the opening of this tunnel the distance between Manali and Leh will be reduced by 46 km while drive time by around 5 hours thus saving crore of rupees in transport.
On the other hand, the people of Lahaul valley will now get year-round connectivity, which otherwise remains cut off from the rest of the world for over four months during heavy snowfall in winter.
The special feature of this double lane tunnel is that it has a telephone facility, fire hydrants, escape egress tunnel, air quality monitoring, CCTV cameras, a broadcasting system, and an automatic incident detection system at every fixed distance.
No doubt, Atal Tunnel Rohtang is an important achievement from a strategic point of view for the nation. Apart from this, the tunnel will also bring significant changes in the socio-economic development of the people of the region.
