Russia Tests Hypersonic Missile

Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian military’s General Staff, said that the missile hit its target 450 kilometres away in the Barents Sea and hit a Mach 8 speed eight times the speed of sound

Russia says it has successfully test-fired a hypersonic cruise missile that can travel at more than eight times the speed of sound.

The Russian Defense Minisry on Wednesday released footage of the Tsirkon missile launched from a naval vessel in the country’s northwest toward a target in the Barents Sea. It shows the missile spewing flames and becoming invisible immediately after changing its direction.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, reported the test-launch to President Vladimir Putin by video link.

Gerasimov said the missile flew at an altitude of 28 kilometers, reaching hypersonic speeds of more than Mach 8.

He said it successfully hit the target about 450 kilometers away in about four-and-a-half minutes.

Putin praised the success of the test, saying it is a big event not only for the Russian armed forces, but also for the whole country.

The United States and China are also developing hypersonic weapons, which are said to be capable of penetrating existing missile defense systems.

Moscow apparently aimed to keep the US in check with the test, as Washington has been building a missile defense network on a global scale.
