There are reports of gunshots inside the church. Residents inside the security cordon have been ordered to remain indoors. Armed police are at the scene along with emergency services.

The interior minister appealed to people to avoid the area in the centre of the French Riviera city. Gérald Darmanin said he was convening a crisis meeting at the ministry in Paris.

A minute’s silence was held in the National Assembly, where Prime Minister Jean Castex had just been giving details of lockdown measures coming into force on Thursday night.

“Without question this is a very serious new challenge that is striking our country,” he said, appealing for unity and cohesion.

The attack took place just one day after the French interior minister warned that the terrorist threat in the country is “very high” amid rising tensions following the decapitation of a French teacher in an apparent Islamist attack.

Darmanin said France must continue to fight against “rampant Islamism which is arming people ideologically.”

A woman has been decapitated during a knife attack near the Notre Dame Basilica church in the French city of Nice, according to French media citing police sources.

The French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has confirmed a police operation is underway.

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, tweeted that one person has been arrested. Mr Estrosi also tweeted that he believed the attack was a terrorist attack

Terrorist attack’ suspected as one dead, several injured in knife attack near church in Nice, France

At least one person was killed and several others injured in a knife attack carried out near a church in the Notre-Dame area of Nice in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The public were asked to avoid the area while a major security operation was carried out by armed police. 

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi  confirmed that the alleged perpetrator has been taken into custody and thanked police for their quick response. 

The motive for the attack remains unclear but Mayor Estrosi confirmed that, based on the evidence so far, it was a terrorist attack.

Meanwhile, police are carrying out a controlled explosion in the area and have asked the public to steer clear while bomb disposal teams work.

The attack comes days after France’s police chief, Frédéric Veaux,  announced that he was bolstering security around churches, mosques and other religious sites “notably on the occasion of Christian religious celebrations around All Saints”.

“France is the target of a high terror threat,” he said, noting that on October 25, a news agency close to al Qaeda “reiterated” the terror group’s call to attack France.
