Chinese President Xi Jinping says the country has made remarkable achievements in eradicating absolute poverty.
State-run China Central Television said Xi made the comment at a meeting of Communist Party leaders on Thursday. His administration had been aiming to wipe out poverty by the end of this year.
Xi said China eliminated poverty by the deadline through an eight-year campaign. China reportedly had nearly 100 million rural residents in poverty at the end of 2012.
But Xi told the meeting that imbalances in the country’s economic development remain stark. He underscored the need to bolster assistance for employment and housing in poor areas.
Analysts say Xi is seeking to boost his support by claiming his administration attained the poverty alleviation goal despite the continuing ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic.
