8th and final phase of DDC polls concluded smoothly across the J&K Union territory today with a voter turnout of 50.98%. Addressing a press conference in Srinagar this evening, State Election Commissioner K.K. Sharma said that in Jammu, the voting percentage was 72.71 percent and in Kashmir Valley it was 29.91 percent. He said a total of 321694 electors exercised their franchise out of a total electorate of 6,40,443 .
Poonch district topped the list with an impressive voter turnout of 83.58 % followed by Reasi district with 81.92% and Rajouri with 77.31 %. In Kashmir Valley, Kupwara district recorded the highest polling at 63.80% followed by Bandipora with 56.56% and Baramulla district recorded 44.60%. With today’s polling the fate of 168 candidates has been sealed in the ballot boxes.

Jammu and Kashmir: Polling is underway for the eighth and last phase of District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Voting is taking place for 28 DDC constituencies – 15 in Jammu Division and 13 in Kashmir Valley. Elaborate security arrangement has been made to ensure smooth and incident free polling. Due to the biting cold, poll process is slow but will pick up as the day progresses.
Our Jammu correspondent reports that a total of 168 candidates are in the fray in Phase-VIII. Of these 122 candidates are male and 46 are female. A total of 6,40,443 electorate are eligible to exercise their franchise for whom State Election Commission has set up 1,703 Polling booths.
The first seven phases of polling held so far has seen impressive turnout of voters exercising their franchise. The 7th Phase of Polling broke the record percentage of voting in all the six phases of DDC Elections.
