Thailand Covid Surge

Thailand reports surge in coronavirus cases.

Thailand has reported a record daily number of more than 500 coronavirus cases, prompting the government to announce travel restrictions and other measures for a province near the capital Bangkok.

Thai authorities said on Sunday that they had confirmed 576 new cases, which included a cluster infection among seafood market workers, mostly migrants, in the province of Samut Sakhon.

A spokesperson for the country’s coronavirus taskforce, Taweesin Visanuyothin, said the provincial government has identified areas where restrictions are to be imposed, and has ordered the closure of the market and workers’ lodgings.

He also announced restrictions on inter-provincial travel and stores, as well as a nighttime curfew for Samut Sakhon that will remain in effect until January 3.

Thailand took action at an early stage of the pandemic by implementing border controls and restrictions on restaurants, and kept the national total of infections at just over 4,300.

For more than six months, new cases had been mostly detected during airport quarantine checks, and the daily tally had remained below 100.

The government is on high alert against the spread of the virus in Bangkok after an elderly woman in the capital who visited the seafood market was found to be infected.
