Norway FM #EriksenSoreide just now. We are deeply worried about developments in Myanmar.

I am deeply concerned about the escalating situation in #Myanmar. Norway strongly urges the military to refrain from all use of violence & of restrictions against people that are exercising their right to expression & assembly & release those who are detained – FM #EriksenSoreide.

The fourth day of protests in Myanmar’s nationwide uprising against military rule ended in tragedy on Tuesday after Myat Thet Thet Khaing, a 19-year-old woman taking part in protests in Naypyitaw, was shot in the head by police.

Another protester, Win Htet Moe, was shot in the arm and has been released from the hospital, and a third, So Wai, is in stable condition after being shot in the chest, while Myat Thet Thet Khaing was said to be fighting for her life. The shootings marked the first use of lethal force against protesters calling for the restoration of the country’s newly elected government. In Yangon and elsewhere, however, there are fears that the recent appearance of pro-military groups at protest sites could signal the start of a more violent phase of the uprising, which has so far remained mostly peaceful.
